Wound Care

Chronic/non-healing wounds

A non-healing or chronic wound is a wound that does not improve after a few weeks.

Certain health conditions can cause chronic non-healing wounds, such as:

  • Anemia
  • Bowel disorders
  • Chronic Osteomyelitis
  • Circulation or clotting disorders, often caused by arteriosclerosis
  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • High Cholesterol
  • Hypertension
  • Kidney Failure
  • Lymphedema
  • Malnourishment
  • Obesity
  • Sickle Cell Anemia
  • Venous Insufficiency

Diabetic wounds

People with diabetes are at increased risk for complications from wound healing for several reasons. Diabetes decreases blood flow, making injuries slower to heal than in people who do not have the disease. In addition, many people with diabetes also have neuropathy that reduces the sensation in their hands or feet leading the patient to not notice or feel an injury right away. The most common two types are wounds of external origin and wounds of internal origin.

For a diabetic patient, every wound is a health concern and requires immediate attention.
