Splenectomy

The spleen is a large organ located on the left side of your abdomen. The spleen has many responsibilities including storing blood, helping to fight infections, and helping to remove old blood.

There are several reasons why you may need to have your spleen removed, the most common being a condition called idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP). Other reasons include diagnosing or treating a tumor, blood supply to the spleen becoming blocked, or an aneurysm forming. There are some hemolytic and genetic disorders which also may require a splenectomy for treatment. Spleen disorders can be detected with a variety of tests including serial blood tests, ultrasound, computerized tomography (CT scan) or MRI.
